PC Optimum vs. Scene+ vs. Air Miles: Which Canadian Grocery Loyalty Program Is Actually Worth It?

You scan your loyalty card. You tap your credit card. You wait a beat while the cashier prints your receipt — and somewhere at the bottom, a little number tells you how many points you just earned. It feels good. But here is the question frugal Canadians should be asking: is your loyalty program actually earning you meaningful money, or is it just making you feel like it is?

With grocery prices still stubbornly high across Canada in 2025, the right loyalty program can genuinely put hundreds of dollars back in your pocket every year. The wrong one — or the right one used passively — can amount to almost nothing. And right now, the Canadian loyalty landscape is in the middle of a major shake-up: Air Miles is being retired and replaced by BMO’s Blue Rewards in summer 2026, Scene+ has aggressively expanded to Sobeys, IGA, and Safeway banners, and PC Optimum continues to dominate at Loblaw-owned stores.

This guide cuts through the marketing fluff and compares PC Optimum, Scene+, and Air Miles/Blue Rewards head-to-head — earn rates, redemption value, partner networks, and real-world savings scenarios — so you can decide where your loyalty is actually worth placing.

Understanding the Canadian Grocery Loyalty Landscape in 2025

Canada’s grocery loyalty space is dominated by three major coalition-style programs, each tied to a major grocery retailer network. Understanding which stores feed which program is the essential first step.

    PC Optimum: The Loblaw Empire

PC Optimum is the loyalty arm of Loblaw Companies Limited, Canada’s largest grocery retailer. You can earn and redeem points at an enormous network including Loblaws, No Frills, Real Canadian Superstore, Fortinos, Zehrs, Independent, and Valu-Mart. The program extends to Shoppers Drug Mart and Pharmaprix (where you earn 15 points per dollar automatically), as well as Esso and Mobil gas stations. [Source: PC Optimum program terms, pcoptimum.ca]

One important catch that trips up many shoppers: at most Loblaws-banner grocery stores (other than Shoppers), there is no automatic base earn rate. You only earn points through personalized weekly offers loaded onto your account via the PC Optimum app. This means the program rewards active, app-using members significantly more than passive ones.

    Scene+: The Entertainment-Grocery Hybrid

Scene+ emerged from the merger of Scotiabank’s Scene program with an entertainment angle, and it made a major move into the grocery space by partnering with Empire Company Limited — the parent of Sobeys, Safeway, IGA, Foodland, FreshCo, Thrifty Foods, Rachelle Béry, and Les Marchés Tradition. [Source: Milesopedia Scene+ guide, milesopedia.com]

The base earn rate at these Empire grocery stores is 2 Scene+ points per dollar spent — but the real magic happens when you pair it with a Scotiabank credit card. The Scotiabank Gold American Express card earns 6 Scene+ points per dollar at Empire-affiliated stores, representing a 6% return — the highest grocery credit card earn rate available in Canada from a single card.

Air Miles / Blue Rewards: A Program in Transition

Air Miles has had a turbulent few years. After its parent company LoyaltyOne filed for bankruptcy, BMO stepped in and acquired the program for US$160 million in 2023. [Source: CBC News, cbc.ca] Now, BMO has announced that Air Miles will officially transition to a new program called Blue Rewards in summer 2026. [Source: BMO Newsroom, newsroom.bmo.com]

For grocery shoppers, this means the traditional Air Miles model — earning at specific grocery partner stores — has evolved. As of 2024, Air Miles expanded its receipt-scanning feature, allowing members to earn points at essentially any Canadian grocery store by scanning receipts through the app. [Source: Air Miles press release, newswire.ca] The program currently has around 10 million active members and over 400 partner brands.

Earn Rates Compared: Where Do You Actually Accumulate Points Fastest?

The earn rate is where most loyalty programs live or die. Here is how each program stacks up for a typical Canadian grocery shopper.

    PC Optimum: The Offer-Stacking Champion

Without a PC Financial credit card, you earn nothing automatically at Loblaws-banner grocery stores. The program is entirely offer-driven. However, when you combine personalized offers (which can routinely hit 20x–50x point multipliers on specific products) with a PC Financial World Elite Mastercard (30 points per dollar at Loblaws stores) or the PC Insiders World Elite Mastercard (40 points per dollar), the value can be excellent.

The sweet spot? Shoppers Drug Mart. You earn 15 base points per dollar automatically, and the World Elite card stacks on top of that for up to 45 points per dollar at Shoppers. Since Shoppers carries a reasonable grocery selection — plus personal care, vitamins, and household products — many frugal shoppers effectively use it as a secondary grocery run to maximize points.

Scene+: Best Raw Grocery Return with the Right Card

Scene+ wins on the raw grocery earn rate when paired with the right Scotiabank card. The Scotiabank Gold American Express earns 6 points per dollar at Empire stores — that is a 6% return, since 1 Scene+ point equals 1 cent when redeemed for groceries or travel. No other major Canadian grocery card combination matches this at a single store network.

Without a premium Scotiabank card, you earn 2 points per dollar (2%) at Scene+ partner grocery stores using the basic Scene+ membership card. Still respectable, and redeemable directly at the register.

Air Miles / Blue Rewards: The Receipt-Scan Revolution

The biggest recent Air Miles improvement for grocery shoppers is receipt scanning. Rather than being locked to specific partner stores, members can now scan receipts from virtually any Canadian grocery store, wholesale club, or alcohol retailer to earn bonus Miles. [Source: Air Miles / newswire.ca]

That said, the earn rate through receipt scanning is modest — the value comes from stacking receipt scans with the BMO Air Miles World Elite Mastercard, which earns 2 Miles per $12 at any Canadian grocery store (roughly 1.4 Miles per $10 spent). For comparison, that is significantly lower than the Scene+ or PC Optimum top-tier rates.

Redemption Value: Getting Your Points Back as Cash (or Close to It)

Earning points is only half the equation. How much is each point actually worth when you redeem it?

    PC Optimum: Simple and Straightforward

PC Optimum uses a clean conversion: 10,000 points equals $10. That means each point is worth exactly 1 cent. You can redeem in-store at checkout across the entire Loblaw and Shoppers network, and there is no minimum redemption for grocery stores (you can use any amount in 10,000-point increments). [Source: PC Optimum program details, pcoptimum.ca]

The power move with PC Optimum is to save your points for special redemption events. Shoppers Drug Mart periodically runs promotions where spending a set number of points earns you significant bonus value — for example, events where redeeming 300,000 points might net an additional $100 discount. These events can push your effective point value well above 1 cent each.

    Scene+: Flexible and Travel-Friendly

Scene+ points are also worth 1 cent each at 1,000 points per $10, when redeemed at Empire grocery stores or Cineplex theatres. Where Scene+ stands out is travel redemption: you can use points for any travel purchase charged to an eligible Scotiabank card, effectively getting 1 cent per point in travel value as well. [Source: Scotiabank Scene+ terms, scotiabank.com]

This flexibility makes Scene+ attractive if you ever want to redirect grocery points toward a family vacation. Redeeming at Harvey’s, Swiss Chalet, East Side Mario’s, and other Recipe Unlimited restaurants at 500 points for $5 is another convenient option.

Air Miles: More Complex, But Improving

Air Miles has two types of miles — Cash Miles and Dream Miles — which has historically been a source of confusion. Cash Miles can be redeemed for e-vouchers at retailers including Starbucks, Amazon, and others (95 Cash Miles = $10), while Dream Miles are for travel, merchandise, and experiences. [Source: Globe and Mail loyalty comparison, theglobeandmail.com]

As Blue Rewards launches in summer 2026, BMO has committed to simplifying the structure: all Miles will automatically convert to Blue Points at equivalent value, and the program promises a cleaner, more flexible redemption experience. For now, existing collectors should continue using their Miles normally — BMO has stated no action is required from members.

Real-World Savings Scenarios: What’s Your Program Actually Worth Per Year?

Let’s ground this in real numbers. The average Canadian household spends approximately $8,400 per year on groceries — about $700 per month. [Source: Statistics Canada, Consumer Price Index data]

*Estimates assume active app use, offer activation, and credit card pairing. Actual savings will vary by shopping habits and offer availability. Credit card annual fees not deducted.

    Scenario: The Loblaws-Only Shopper

If you exclusively shop at Loblaws, No Frills, or Real Canadian Superstore and already have a PC Financial World Elite Mastercard, PC Optimum is the clear choice. Activate your weekly offers, stack them with credit card points, and load up during 20x events. A family spending $700/month can realistically earn $200–$300 in annual grocery savings through disciplined offer stacking.

Scenario: The Sobeys / Safeway Family

If Sobeys or Safeway is your primary store, Scene+ with the Scotiabank Gold American Express is the most powerful combination available in Canada. At a 6% return, a $700/month grocery budget yields over $500 in Scene+ points annually — more than enough to offset the card’s $120 annual fee and put meaningful grocery credits back on the table.

    Scenario: The Flexible Multi-Store Shopper

If you shop at whatever store has the best flyer deals, Air Miles’ receipt-scanning feature (and soon, Blue Rewards) gives you the most flexibility — you earn something at virtually any Canadian grocery chain. The earn rate is lower, but universal coverage is valuable if you prioritize deal-hunting over brand loyalty.

Stacking Strategies: How to Get the Most from Any Program

Regardless of which program you choose, the difference between a passive member and an active one can easily be $200–$400 per year. Here are the stacking strategies that consistently deliver the best results.

Always Activate Digital Offers Before You Shop

Both PC Optimum and Scene+ offer personalized and weekly bonus point offers through their apps. Activating these before you shop — even for products you already planned to buy — is pure free money. Skipping this step is the single biggest mistake casual loyalty members make.

Pair Your Loyalty Card with the Right Credit Card

Using the right credit card at the right store can double or triple your effective earn rate. The PC Financial World Elite at Loblaws, the Scotiabank Gold Amex at Sobeys/IGA, or the BMO Air Miles World Elite at any grocery store all provide meaningful acceleration on top of the base program.

Time Big Purchases Around Bonus Events

PC Optimum’s 20x point events at Shoppers Drug Mart (often tied to specific products or total spend thresholds), Scene+’s periodic Points Days events, and Air Miles bonus Mile promotions are when the real wealth-building happens. Stock up on non-perishables, health products, and household items during these windows.

    Consider Gift Card Stacking (Scene+)

One clever Scene+ hack: purchasing grocery gift cards during gift card bonus events earns Scene+ points at the gift card face value. Since gift cards are used at the same stores, this effectively front-loads your points earning before spending. Note that Scene+ terms exclude gift card purchases from some offers, so always check current event rules.

    Don’t Forget the Pharmacies

Shoppers Drug Mart is, arguably, the most underrated earning opportunity in the PC Optimum ecosystem. The 15 base points per dollar (or 45 with the World Elite card) applies to nearly everything in the store — from groceries to vitamins to cosmetics — and the redemption events are among the most lucrative in the Canadian loyalty space.

The Air Miles to Blue Rewards Transition: What You Need to Know Right Now

If you are an Air Miles collector, this is the most important section for you. Here is what BMO has confirmed about the Blue Rewards transition:

    • Blue Rewards launches in summer 2026.
    • All existing Miles will automatically convert to Blue Points at equivalent value — no action required from members.
    • BMO Air Miles credit and debit cards will continue working uninterrupted.
    • New partners include Porter Airlines, Accor/Fairmont hotels, Instacart, and dozens of MTY Group restaurants.
    • Blue Rewards members can earn points at grocery retailers by scanning receipts using the Blue Rewards app, continuing the receipt-scanning innovation Air Miles introduced.

[Source: BMO Blue Rewards announcement, newsroom.bmo.com, January 2026]

Do not panic-redeem your Air Miles. The program is not disappearing — it is being modernized under BMO’s ownership with a significantly expanded partner network.

    💡 BOTTOM LINE
Shopper checking loyalty points on smartphone app in grocery store.

The Bottom Line: Stack Smart, Not Just Loyal

Canadian grocery loyalty programs are worth your time — but only if you use them strategically. The passive member who simply scans their card and never activates offers, chooses the wrong program for their shopping habits, or ignores the credit card pairing opportunity is leaving significant money on the table.

To summarize the key takeaways from this comparison:

    • PC Optimum is Canada’s most accessible program with the largest store network, and is unbeatable at Shoppers Drug Mart when paired with a PC Financial credit card.
    • Scene+ offers the highest raw grocery earn rate in the country (6% with the Scotiabank Gold Amex at Empire stores) and is the best pick for Sobeys/IGA/Safeway shoppers.
    • Air Miles / Blue Rewards is transitioning to a stronger, more flexible program under BMO — and is the best fit for multi-store shoppers who want maximum partner flexibility.
    • Credit card pairing is non-negotiable for serious savers — the loyalty card alone rarely delivers enough value.
    • Activating weekly digital offers and timing big purchases around bonus events separates the $50/year savers from the $400/year savers.

The most frugal approach? Many Canadians run two programs simultaneously — for example, Scene+ at Sobeys and PC Optimum at Shoppers — to capture value across different spending categories. You do not have to be monogamous with your loyalty.

Pick the program that matches where you already shop, get the right credit card to stack on top of it, and activate those digital offers. Your grocery bill will thank you.
